📱 Getting Started

New to Device Detox? Here's how to get started:

  1. Grant Screen Time permission — Device Detox will ask on first launch; this allows it to apply voluntary app limits during your sessions
  2. Select apps to limit — choose individual apps or entire categories you want to stay away from during your session
  3. Configure your session — pick a duration and a commitment tier (the price you'll pay if you want to exit early)
  4. Start your session — the countdown begins and your selected apps will show a focus screen
  5. Complete your session — when the timer ends, all limits are automatically removed

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is my data private and secure?

A: Yes. Session history (duration, completion status, streak data) is stored locally on your device using Apple's SwiftData framework. If you are signed into iCloud, it may sync across your devices via your personal iCloud account. We never transmit data to our own servers and have zero access to your information.

Q: What apps can I limit?

A: You can limit any app installed on your device, as well as entire app categories (e.g. Social, Games, Entertainment) and web domains in Safari. The specific apps you choose are never stored or transmitted — only the count is recorded for your session summary.

Q: How does the early exit work?

A: When you configure a session, you select a commitment tier (a price you're willing to pay to exit early). If you tap "End early" during a session, you'll be shown the price and an Apple payment sheet. Completing the purchase ends your session immediately. If you cancel the purchase, the session continues.

Q: What if I don't want to pay to exit early?

A: You can configure a session without an early-exit option. Alternatively, you can always revoke Screen Time permission in iOS Settings → Screen Time, which will remove Device Detox's ability to limit apps (though we encourage committing to your session!).

Q: Why does Device Detox require a physical device?

A: Apple's Screen Time API (which powers the app limiting feature) does not function in the iOS Simulator. Device Detox must be run on a real iPhone running iOS 17 or later.

Q: The app limits didn't turn off after my session ended — what do I do?

A: This is rare but can happen if iOS prevents the app from running in the background. Simply open the Device Detox app — it checks for expired sessions every time it becomes active and will immediately remove any stale limits. If the issue persists, contact support.

Q: Can I use Device Detox on iPad?

A: Device Detox is currently optimised for iPhone. iPad support may be added in a future update.

Q: Does Device Detox sync across devices?

A: Session history (streaks, completed sessions) syncs via iCloud if you are signed in. Your active session and app selection are device-specific.

Q: How do I request a refund for an early-exit purchase?

A: All purchases are processed by Apple. Please request a refund directly through Apple Support at reportaproblem.apple.com or via the App Store → your Apple ID → Purchase History.

Q: What iOS version do I need?

A: Device Detox requires iOS 17.0 or later.
